Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has an identity including status, location, anniversary, logo, flag, hymn, march, and academic dress as stipulated by the Government Regulation No. 16 of 2014 concerning Statutes of USU.
Status
USU is a legal entity state university that manages academic and non-academic affairs autonomously (Article 5).
Location
USU is located in Medan (Article 6)
Anniversary
The 20th (twentieth) of August is designated as the anniversary (dies natalis) of USU (Article 7).
Logo
The logo of USU is displayed in buildings, offices, stamps, certificates, and every formal status and documentation in terms of power, authority and ownership of USU (Article 8 Paragraph 2).
Flag
USU has a rectangular flag with a dark green base, in the middle is the logo of USU, and underneath is a writing of the Universitas Sumatera Utara (Article 9 Paragraph 1).
Hymn and March
USU Hymn and March are played at official ceremonies (Article 10).
Academic Dress
USU has student’s academic dress and attributes (Article 12 Point 1)

The logo of USU looks like a flower garland with the following elements, colors, and meanings:
- a golden yellow star symbolizes the height of knowledge that is based on faith and piety;
- a chain of white jasmine flowers symbolizes nobility;
- a chain of yellow rice symbolizes the ability to be well-educated but humble;
- a chain of green tobacco leaves symbolizes Deli Tobacco, a local product.
