FMIPA

Historical Background

The establishment of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) was initiated in 1959 through several discussions in the USU management, which, at that time, was called the Presidium and Assessor Meeting under the name of Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences (FIPIA). Once the plan to establish FIPIA was postponed, USU stopped due to an upheaval. However, it was eventually approved by the Minister under the decree No. 9638/Sekret/BUP/1965. The inauguration of FIPIA was marked by the official opening of 3 (three) departments: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In 1969, FIPIA USU opened the Department of Pharmacy, and in 1981 it opened the Chemistry Analyst Diploma Program through the Decree of Rector No. 3491/PT05/SK/C/1981. In 1974, FIPIA changed its name to the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences USU and in 1982, it changed its name again to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA). In 1985, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) was entrusted by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to organize the Educational Diploma Program covering the Study Programs of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This program was aimed at procuring teachers in the field of exact sciences to be assigned in the rural areas. All students in this program were under scholarship. Dies Natalis of FMIPA is annually celebrated on 25 August, the time of the inauguration of the first management of FIPIA. The Department of Pharmacy changed its status to the Faculty of Pharmacy, based on the Decree of Rector No. 1050/J05/SK/KP/2006 on 8 August 2006.
